[dropcap]M[/dropcap]etavelvet is an extension of the Velvet short-read de novo assembly program. It is specifically designed to assembly short-reads obtained from sources with numerous taxa such as metagenomes. As shown in the diagram below, metavelvet decomposes the de Bruijn graphs constructed by short-read assembly into individual sub-graphs followed by building scaffolds based on these decomposed sub-graphs. Ultimately, these should produce contigs from individual species from a mixed input sample.
